              Formation of the Lodge


              The desire for the establishment of a Lodge in the West

       Wight, particularly in the Freshwater area, existed many years


       before Needles Lodge came into being. W. Bro. F. D. Laugharne,

       records in his book “Freemasonry in Hampshire & the Isle of

       Wight” that “during warm weather, the Lodge (No.151)


       occasionally held a `Lodge of Recreation’ and the meeting on 23

       July 1849 was duly Opened and Tyled in a chalk-pit on

       Freshwater Down, with four brethren acting as Outer Guards.


       They were interrupted by two cowans and intruders –a man and a
